Ingredients

3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter softened

1/4 cup chopped nuts

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp allspice

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1 egg

1 cup applesauce

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup buttermilk

Preparation

Topping: Combine 1/4 cup flour, brown sugar, 2 tbsp butter, and nuts in a bowl with fingers until crumbly. Set aside.

Cake:

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cup flour, white sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Melt remaining butter and mix into flour mixture.
  3. Add egg, applesauce, vanilla, and buttermilk. Mix with hand mixer until well blended.
  4. Pour into greased 9"x9"x2" pan and sprinkle with the topping.
  5. Bake at 375 deg F for 30 minutes. Let cool a few minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.
