Sift:

2 3/4 C. flour

1 t. baking soda

1/2 t. salt

1/2 lb. (1 cup) butter

1 t. each: cinnamon, mace, allspice, dry mustard

1 t. vanilla extract

1 T. instant coffee dissolved in 2 T. boiling water

1 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

3 eggs

1 C. raisins (5 oz.)

1 generous cup dates (8 oz.) coarsely quartered

2 generous cups walnuts, (8 oz.), coarsely broken

Glaze:

1 1/2 C. powdered sugar

2 T. soft butter

2 T 2 t. light cream

1 t. vanilla extract

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375.

Racks high in oven. Aluminum foil on cookie sheets.

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside in large bowl. Beat butter. Add cinnamon, mace, allspice, mustard, vanilla and coffee. Gradually add sugar and beat well. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Scrape frequently. On low, gradually add sifted flour mixture, only til blended. Remove mixer. Stir in raisins, dates, nuts. Drop by large, rounded spoonfuls onto foil. Bake 15 mins. until well-browned and tops spring back and feel firm. Reverse pan to ensure even browning. While first sheet is baking, prepare glaze - cover when not in use. Remove cookies from oven - slide foil off. Brush cookies with glaze immediately.
